  • Original Item: One of a Kind. Here we have a lovely bakelite desk ornament notepad holder, which features a plated cast metal aircraft at the top. This looks to have been given to USAF Major General Byron E. Gates, after he was recalled to active duty Aug. 1, 1955 and was assigned at ATRC Headquarters, Scott Air Force Base, Ill, with duty station at Chanute Air Force Base, Ill. General Gates originally enlisted in 1917, and served throughout WWI, WWII, and the Korean war. For more details please see his biography at the USAF website: Maj. Gen. Byron E. Gates.

The notepad holder measures 4"W by 7 3/4", and does not look to have any type of marker mark on it. The notepad is held inside, and just below the airplane ornament is a brass plaque reading:

    Happy Landings
    GEN. B. E. GATES
    CHANUTE A.F.B. 1955

It also comes with a small note describing the desk ornament, which was folded up and placed inside.

A great piece of U.S. Air Force memorabilia!
