  • Original Item: Only One Available. Here at IMA we just received a very beautiful collection of U.S. Navy ships’ pennants, most of which were ships that were in port during the Japanese attack at Pearl Harbor. This pennant is for the USS Maryland, which was on Battleship Row during the attack. She was lightly attacked and returned to service in 1942 and saw extensive service in the Pacific, first supporting the rest of the fleet at the Battle of Midway.

The pennant is of multi-piece construction of blue and gold felt and has the image of the Maryland and all the writing painted on the surface. The top portion features the U.S.S. Maryland with the words Welcome U.S. NAVY and the bottom has U.S.S. MARYLAND painted in blue. We believe the pennant to be dated from the late 1920s to the early 1930’s, before the U.S. involvement in WWII. The condition is great for its age, but it does have the expected fading and moth nips, nothing extensive. It measures from corner to corner 28” with a hoist side width of approximately 11”.

This is a very beautiful U.S. Navy pennant of a historic ship that survived the attack at Pearl Harbor and took the fight to the enemy in the Pacific.

    USS Maryland (BB-46)
The USS Maryland (BB-46), also known as "Old Mary" or "Fighting Mary" to her crewmates, was a Colorado-class battleship. She was the third ship of the United States Navy to be named in honor of the seventh state. She was commissioned in 1921, and served as the flagship of the fleet, cruised to Australia, New Zealand, and Brazil.

During World War II, she was on Battleship Row during the Attack on Pearl Harbor, and was lightly damaged by Japanese bombs. Returning to duty in 1942, she saw service in the Pacific War, first supporting the rest of the fleet at the Battle of Midway, and then patrolling the Fiji Islands to guard against Japanese incursion. Next, she went on the offensive, commencing shore bombardments in the Battle of Tarawa and later in the Battle of Kwajalein. During the Battle of Saipan she took torpedo damage to her bow, necessitating repairs and refits. She then participated in the Battle of Leyte Gulf where she was hit by a kamikaze. She took another kamikaze hit at the Battle of Okinawa, and was under repair toward the end of World War II. The USS Maryland had completed repairs at Bremerton, WA and was sailing back to the Pacific Theater when word was received that the war had ended. The ship turned around and returned to the Port of Long Beach, CA.

After service in Operation Magic Carpet, she was decommissioned in 1947, and sold for scrap in 1959. She received seven battle stars for World War II service.
