  • Original Item. One-of-a-Kind. This is a great scrap of aircraft skin taken from Plane 404, U.S.S. Colorado, which crashed at sea on February 16th, 1937. The piece is gray on the front and fabric on the back. The piece measures about 6 x 2½”. The piece of aircraft skin reads:

    FROM PLANE 404
    U.S.S. COLORADO WHICH
CRASHED AT SEA FEB. 16, 1937
    LT. HORNEY PILOT
    ENS. WENTZ OBSERVER
    BOTH SAVED.

The plane crashed into the sea and this piece was recovered from it. We haven’t been able to find very much information on this crash given that both men survived, making this a great research project. The Colorado saw heavy service after World War I and into World War II, and also assisted in the search for Amelia Earhart. A great piece of history ready for further research and display.
