Original Item: Only One Available. This is a solid example of the seldom encountered, rather rare 10 Gauge M5 “Very” Pistol. We have never had an example such as this one, but have previously sold the near identical British MkVI Signal Flare Pistol as sold to the British on the Lend-Lease program for use in WWII due to a shortage of signal pistols. Here we have a wonderful U.S. made flare pistol by Harrington and Richardson, who had previously made flare pistols during the first world war. These pistols are characterized by beautiful traditional manufacturing methods of forging and machining, and are really a thing of beauty.
The top of the machined barrel is marked with the H & R address and technical information:
PISTOL, VERY, 10 GAUGE, M5
HARRINGTON & RICHARDSON ARMS CO.
WORCESTER, MASS. U.S.A.
The left side of the frame is marked with NOT INTERCHANGEABLE and the right with UNITED STATES PROPERTY. The barrel is also further marked but on the right side with PAT PEND. Breaking open the pistol reveals a serial number of 81 on the bottom of the barrel, which matches the numbers on the bottom front of the frame and on the breech locking lever. This is a very early produced example!
The overall condition is quite nice but does show age and minor use. The blued barrel and frame has retained their proper finish well but there is areas of loss replaced by surface oxidation. After closer examination you will be able to notice past pitting present as well. The grips are in lovely condition with the checked wood exhibiting a great color but does have minor chipping present. There is no firing pin present.
An incredibly early M5 Very Pistol that comes more than ready for further research and display.
