  • Original Item: Only One Available. This is an excellent original U.S. pre-WWII Mk II fragmentation grenade retaining a desirable early combination of features including the “cutback” style fuze, short spoon, screw-bottom filling plug, and grey-green High Explosive paint. The grenade is totally inert and has been demilitarized with a hollow body and non-functional fuze assembly.

This example is completely inert and has been demilitarized in accordance with current ATF guidelines. It contains no explosive material, cannot function as originally designed, and is NOT AVAILABLE FOR EXPORT.

This is an excellent example of the iconic U.S. fragmentation pineapple grenade issued during before and into the early days of WWII. The Mk II was standardized in 1920 replacing the Mk I of 1917. It was phased out gradually, the U.S. Navy being the last users, and on 2 April 1945 the Mk II and Mk IIA1 were re-designated the Mk 2 and Mk 2A1. Early MKII Grenades features a “cutback” style fuze, and a more taped body which was tapped for a screw on the end. The Grenade still retains its original Grey/Green H.E. “High Explosive” paint, which indicated that the grenade was “loaded” during the WWI-Pre WWII period. The base has a screw cap insert still present.

The Mk II was commonly known as a pineapple grenade, because of its shape and structure. Grooves were cast into the cast iron shell, which was believed at the time to aid in fragmentation and had the side benefit of aiding in gripping the grenade: this provision gave it the appearance of a pineapple fruit. The Mk II was identified with an all yellow body prior to 1943. They were then painted olive drab for camouflage purposes with a narrow yellow band below the fuse. There are numerous variations in the fragment and groove details that can be found, which seems to depend on the particular manufacturer.

The Mk.IIA1 could be found with either the earlier body with a filling hole or the newer body without filling hole. It was up to the manufacturer which body style was used. The filling is 0.74 ounces of EC Blank fire powder.

This great WWII issue grenade. It comes with an original fuse and pin, with the correct MKII “Cutback” Pre-WWII style short spoon. The body is marked with an “R” maker mark. The top of the fuze is stamped with a "B" in a Diamond.

The combination of the early cutback fuze, short spoon, screw-bottom body, R maker mark, surviving H.E. paint, and original pin makes this a particularly strong representative example of a pre-WWII U.S. Mk II grenade. In its present completely inert configuration, it provides an excellent study piece illustrating the transitional construction and markings found on early American fragmentation grenades.
