Original U.S. Pre-WWII Era “Commercial” Union Cutlery Model #2071-6 Aluminum Hollow Handle Kabar Survival Knife With Original Matches, Pommel Compass and Leather Sheath - Circa 1930s

Item Description

Original Item: Only One Available. The originator of the KA-BAR trademark, Union Cutlery Co, began using the name in 1923, having received a letter from a fur trapper who had used the knife to kill a wounded bear which attacked him when his rifle jammed. According to company records, the letter was only partially legible; "ka bar" could be read, as fragments of the phrase "kill a bear". In 1923, the company adopted the name Ka-Bar from the "bear story" as its trademark. From 1923, the KA-BAR trademark was used as a ricasso stamp by Union Cutlery Co. on its line of automatic switchblade pocket knives, including the KA-BAR Grizzly, KA-BAR Baby Grizzly, and KA-BAR Model 6110 Lever Release knives. The company produced about 1 million knives with the trademark on the ricasso.

While this isn’t your typical Kabar, it still is a rare and beautiful variant! This is a “Commercial” Union Cutlery Model #2071-6 with hollow aluminum handle. These knives were made in the early to mid 1930s for the commercial/civilian market, though that does not mean they didn’t find their way to the battlefield as these knives would have been handy on all fronts of the war including the skies.

The knife features a hollow 4 ⅛” handle with a pommel cap that has a small compass. Surprisingly enough, the handle still contains (9) of the original waterproofed “strike anywhere” matches, though we cannot confirm that they would still ignite. The 6” blade is still in wonderful condition though there is some lite staining present. The ricasso still retains the standard “KA-BAR” marking and the “UNION CUTLERY CO. / OLEAN, N.Y.”.

The leather belt sheath does look to be original to the knife after making comparisons with others found. It still retains all 9 rivets and the stitching is still tightly in place. The belt loop does have a retaining strap with both snap buttons, without any damage or heavy wear present.

A great example of a Pre War survival knife by the legendary KABAR. Comes ready for display.
