Item Description

Original Item. One-of-a-Kind. This is a phenomenal M1885 Uniform Coat identified to Sergeant Benjamin F. Tinney, 112th Coastal Artillery Company, who enlisted in the U.S. Army on August 12th, 1901. This was shortly after the formation of the Coastal Artillery Corps, and Tinney served with the 112th Company until his final discharge on December 14th, 1905. The 112th Company was stationed at Fort DuPont, Delaware for the entirety of Tinney’s service.

The jacket is in great condition with all 9 of its Federal eagle buttons retained. There are gorgeous Artillery Sergeant’s chevrons on both sleeves, and U.S. collar insignia. This example bears a gorgeous red Aiguillette cord on the left shoulder. The interior of the coat is in good condition with heavy sweat staining from service. The jacket is named on the interior B.F. TINNEY 112 CO. From this we were able to find Tinney’s Register of Enlistment for both 1901 and 1904.

Tinney’s obituary states that he was born in Clio, Michigan in 1875, and at the age of 14 years old he moved to Flint, where he joined up with the “Flint Union Blues”, going overseas during the Spanish-American War. Tinney was sent to Cuba and took part in the Battle of Agnadoras. He spent 10 weeks fighting and returned stateside, enlisting in the Coastal Artillery Corps in 1901. He held the commission of gun commander at Fort Dupont. Tinney then served with the government police and was commissioned at the Philadelphia Naval Yard when he died of Typhoid on April 6th, 1907.

This is a really tremendous M1885 coat, the first we have had with a truly positive identification, as Army records during this period were very scarce. Comes ready for further research and display!
