Original Item: Only One Available. This is a very scarce original pre-WWI U.S. Army recruiting poster from a series created by artist Michael P. Whelan around 1910. Titled “Men Wanted for the Army,” the image presents a romanticized cavalry scene strongly evocative of the closing Indian Wars era and the American West.

The central figure is a mounted cavalry bugler preparing to sound his instrument, while another uniformed cavalryman stands nearby. The bugler is identified as a member of Troop C, 1st Cavalry, while the First Sergeant is shown as belonging to Company A. Both men wear M1902 pattern uniforms and are depicted with service stripes, medals, and aiguillettes, giving the artwork a particularly detailed military character.

The poster reflects the recruiting imagery used by the U.S. Army during the years before WWI, when cavalry service still carried a strong association with frontier duty, horsemanship, mobility, and the romantic image of the mounted soldier. By this period, the Army was increasingly modernizing, but traditional cavalry imagery remained a powerful recruiting tool and continued to appeal to the public.

Michael P. Whelan produced a number of military recruiting images during this period, and surviving examples from this series are considerably less commonly encountered than the mass-produced WWI recruiting posters that followed only a few years later.

The poster is framed and measures approximately 28 5/8 x 39 inches overall.

The frame remains in good condition and retains a strong, intact hanging wire on the reverse.

The poster itself shows considerable age. There is heavy overall darkening and toning to the paper, along with scattered minor tears, edge nicks, areas of surface wear, and some localized paper loss. Despite this, the principal image remains strong and the composition is still highly displayable.

The combination of early U.S. Army recruiting history, detailed M1902 cavalry uniforms, 1st Cavalry associations, and Michael P. Whelan’s artwork makes this a particularly appealing piece of pre-WWI American military ephemera.

This is one of the more difficult early U.S. Army recruiting posters to encounter, especially compared with the much more widely reproduced WWI-era examples, and it remains a striking representation of the Army’s cavalry tradition on the eve of the First World War.
