Original Item: Only One Available. Now this is a rather elegantly designed dress sword! Pre Civil War era swords have a unique beauty about them and this one definitely does not lack in that department! We have never been able to offer one of these before here at IMA and this example is far from a disappointment.
Written regulations for the Medical Corps specified the requirement for Surgeons and Assistant Surgeons to obtain and wear dress swords. The U. S. Army M 1840 Medical Staff sword was fairly unique when compared to the sword patterns for both Staff and Field/Line officers and Non-Commissioned officers of the same time period. These swords were elegant in design and completely ceremonial in purpose.
The cruciform-style brass crossguard and chappe is in good shape, with limited patina and much of the original gilt retained. The pommel is a cast of an acorn with a beautifully etched American eagle beneath it on the actual cast grip. Normally these swords had a separately attached “MS” for Medical Services on the front of the shield on the hilt, but now only evidence of one having been brazed on remains.
The blade is double-edge and thin without a fuller. The steel still retains some of its original shine, with good edge and point, and lightly frosted etching is somewhat Patriotic in nature. There are various images and motifs of a Caduceus as well as American Eagles.
The scabbard is in wonderful condition and without any major dents, bends or extensive damage, however there are a few small dents present. Just like the sword, the scabbard has retained much of the original gold gilt. There are floral designs etched into the scabbard as well as a lovely Eagle clutching an American flag shield.
This is truly an exceptionally rare pre-Civil war item, and something that not only isn’t seen everyday, but an item we won’t expect to have up for grabs for too long.
