Item Description
Original item: Only One Available. Here we have a very smart looking original Eagle Headed and ivory gripped U.S. Officer's sword, typical of the type made in the 1830s and later. The sword is all brass mounted with a standard "D" hand guard and a very nice "closed mouth" Eagle pommel. The grip is fluted ivory or bone which is loose on the tang. The hand guard is also somewhat loose, and the original gilding on the brass is still mostly present.
Overall it is 32 inches long, with a 27 1/4 inch long etched and fire blued single edged straight blade.
Each side has a broad fuller towards the spine that extends half way down the blade, with some very nice etching on the first 1/3 of the blade, as well as on the spine. There is also some light staining in areas, but nothing major. It really is a quite nice blade.
The left side of the ricasso is marked with the manufacturer's logo of a Königskopf (King's Head), the logo of Gebrüder Weyersberg, Waffenfabrik, founded in 1787 by the brothers Johan William and Peter to manufacture sword and knife blades. By 1850 they were located on Kölnerstrasse in the Ohligs area of the City of Solingen. From 1859 onward they operated a factory on Hochstrasse in the same area. Called "The City of Blades", Solingen is a world-renowned edged weapon area, with a history dating back to the middle ages. The Weyersberg family itself had a history of swordmaking going back at least 6 generations. The company had numerous contacts and customers in Europe, and supplied weapons to Napoleon's army, as well as to the Prussian and Russian armies during the 19th century, until they merged with W.R. This smart sword comes together with its original brass scabbard with two hanging rings. Unfortunately there are some hard dents and bending towards the bottom of the scabbard. This denting has made it rather difficult to properly stow the sword. Hard to find in this condition especially being complete with its original Scabbard.
