Original U.S. Pre Civil War Ells 1854 and 1857 Patent 5-Shot Percussion Revolver

Item Description

Original Item: Only One Available. This is a rare example of this .28" bore Five Shot Revolver, a design patented on August 6th 1854 and again on April 28th 1857. The loading lever mechanism is much like that of a Colt pocket and Colt Navy Revolver. The Hammer is also mounted slightly off center to the right which is fascinating as well. There is some very nice engraving on the frame and cylinder. The only real markings are on either side of the hammer:

ELLS PATENT

on one side, and the other reads:

AUG. 1 1854.
APRIL.28. 1857.

Barrel length is about 3 5/8", with an overall length of 8 1/2", the revolver blued overall with wood grip panels. It is marked with serial number 21 on the cylinder,  under the barrel, on the grip frame under the grips, and on both wooden grips. It functions well, but as with any antique revolver, can be somewhat finicky. The bore is clean but somewhat worn. There also was a small piece of a broken leaf spring found taped to the inside of one grip panel, but we could not find if it is even from this revolver.

A very nice condition example of a rare pre Civil War Revolver.  Ready to display!
