Item Description
Original Item: Only One Available. The Woodman's Pal survival axe was originally a tool for forestry or agriculture, but quickly earned a place as an outstanding military implement. The well designed and balanced blade was first procured in World War II, and was useful for brush clearing, construction, camouflage, and a multitude of other listed uses. The Woodman's Pal served through the Vietnam War and is still part of the military inventory of edged tools in the 21st Century. It is 16 1/2 inches in overall length, with an 11 3/4 inch blade.
The official designation used during WWII was the LC-14-B, which would be stamped on the blade. However after WWII, this marking was not seen as often, and many were also privately purchased.
This example is in excellent unissued condition, and is from the post war period. We acquired the axe with the original scabbard and manuals in what looks to be polybag packaging, probably from when it was surplussed and sold off. The edges are still very sharp, with the original factory grind present, so please handle with care. The handle shows no use, and the only condition issues seem to be from long storage, which has resulted in a bit of staining on the blade edge, and the paint flaking off of the handguard due to light oxidation.
The blade itself is marked:
WOODMAN'S PAL
284
TRADE (Victory Logo) MARK
This example was made after the company moved from Reading to Oley PA in the post war years. It has the full logo, used after the patent for the design was granted.
The steel belt carrier scabbard is in excellent shape, made of blued steel, which has just a bit of light oxidation in places. These were far more resilient than the WWII style canvas sheaths, which easily wore through. It has a leather retention strap, as well as a steel belt hook on the back.
The set came with the original "War Issue" Manual for the Woodman's pal, dated 1944, and also came with one of the small pamphlets they were originally issued with during WWII: LIVING IN THE JUNGLE WITH THE U.S. ARMY KNIFE LC-14-B (THE WOODMAN’S PAL), written by Frederick Ehrsam, C.E., and copyrighted 1944. The manuals are in great shape and completely legible. Following WWII there was no real need to update the manuals, and they continued to be issued with the tool for decades.
Overall this is a great chance to own a classic U.S. Military survival tool in fantastic condition, complete with the steel original belt carrier and manuals!
