Original Item: Only One Available. This is an original U.S. Model 1892 Krag rifle bayonet dated 1901, placing its manufacture directly within the Philippine-American War period. The bayonet was produced for the family of U.S. Krag-Jørgensen rifles, including the Models 1892, 1896, and 1898, and is accompanied by its original-style all-steel swivel scabbard. The scabbard is damaged internally and presently prevents the bayonet from seating completely, but the pair remains an attractive period combination.
The "Krag" was the U.S. Army's first repeating rifle, and the M1892 bayonet was based on the Swiss M1889 bayonet, made for use on the 7.5 mm. M1889 Schmidt-Rubin straight-pull bolt-action rifle.
This example is in fair condition, with the original bright finish slightly oxidized to a gray/brown coloration. The blade shows signs of honest use, most likely in a tropical environment, but there is heavy staining and residue on the blade. The blade has survived far better than the rest of the bayonet, however. he 1892 pattern grips are in good condition with just a few dents and chips, and are held in place by ground flat domed rivets. The wood does show some wear and open grain.
The blade is marked 1901 on one side, and US on the other, and has a fully functional bayonet catch. The scabbard is in rough condition, with a blued finish, and a fully functional but stiff swivel. The scabbard body is straight, with heavy surface rust and a few soft dents. Something on the interior is not right, so the bayonet does not insert in all the way.
This example is particularly noteworthy for its 1901 Springfield Armory date, original U.S. markings, later-pattern domed grip rivets, functional catch, surviving wood grips, and accompanying blued steel swivel scabbard. The staining and oxidation to the blade, open grain and wear to the grips, and internal scabbard damage are all important condition considerations, but the set remains a strong representative example of the bayonet carried with U.S. Krag rifles during the Philippine-American War period.
