Original Item: Only One Available. This is a very good original U.S. Model 1892 Krag knife bayonet, manufactured at Springfield Armory and dated 1900, accompanied by an all-steel Krag scabbard with swiveling belt attachment. The 1900 manufacture date places the bayonet squarely within the Philippine-American War era, when the Krag-Jørgensen was the principal U.S. Army service rifle, although no individual provenance presently establishes that this specific bayonet served in the Philippines.
The Model 1892 bayonet was adopted for use with the U.S. Krag-Jørgensen rifle family and was based closely on the Swiss Model 1889 knife bayonet. The Krag itself represented an important step in U.S. small-arms development as the Army's first standard-issue repeating rifle, replacing the single-shot Springfield Trapdoor system. Production of the M1892 bayonet began at Springfield Armory in 1894 and continued into the early twentieth century.
This example is in very good condition, with the original bright finish oxidized to a gray/brown coloration. The blade has been sharpened, and shows heavy use. The edge does show sharpening wear with a few small nicks present. The 1892 pattern ribbed grips are in fair condition with some dents and chips, and are held in place by ground flat domed rivets. The wood does show some heavy wear and open grain.
The blade is marked 1900 on one side, and US on the other, and has a fully functional bayonet catch, though it is a bit stiff. Interestingly, there is a number stamped to the side of the pommel, 108, likely a rack or soldier number. A very interesting period addition that we do not really see on these. The scabbard is in good condition, but it has been entirely repainted in black which is now wearing away in spots. There is no major damage to the scabbard, but the belt hook was painted as well.
This example combines a desirable 1900 Springfield Armory date, clearly visible US marking, functional catch, unusual 108 pommel number, and surviving steel scabbard with swivel attachment. The sharpened and nicked blade, worn ribbed grips, oxidized bright finish, and black-repainted scabbard all document a long service and post-service history, making it a strong representative example of the bayonet issued with one of the defining U.S. military rifles of the Philippine-American War era.
