Original Item: Only One Available. This is a very good original U.S. Model 1892 Krag rifle bayonet, manufactured at Springfield Armory and dated 1899, complete with its all-steel scabbard fitted with an early swivel belt hanger. The 1899 date places the bayonet squarely within the period of the Philippine-American War, when the Krag-Jørgensen was the standard U.S. Army service rifle. The blade retains its bright-finish character beneath an even gray patina, while the smooth-pattern wood grips, functional locking catch, and intact scabbard make this a particularly complete example.
The Model 1892 bayonet was adopted for the U.S. Army’s new Krag-Jørgensen rifle family and was based closely on the Swiss Model 1889 bayonet used with the Schmidt-Rubin straight-pull rifle. Springfield Armory production began in 1894 and continued through 1903. By 1899 the Krag rifle and bayonet were serving extensively with American troops overseas, including in the Philippines.
The "Krag" was the U.S. Army's first repeating rifle, and the M1892 bayonet was based on the Swiss M1889 bayonet, made for use on the 7.5 mm. M1889 Schmidt-Rubin straight-pull bolt-action rifle.
This example is in very good condition, with the original bright finish oxidized to a gray coloration. Blade shows signs of light and period sharpening (grinder marks), and of honest use, most likely in a tropical environment. The 1892 pattern "smooth" grips are in good condition with just a few dents and chips, and are held in place by flat rivets. The wood does show some wear but is still solid.
The blade is marked 1899 on one side, and US on the other, and has a fully functional bayonet catch. The scabbard is in very good condition, with a blued finish, and a fully functional swivel. The scabbard body is straight, with minor finish wear.
With its 1899 date, U.S. ricasso marking, transitional smooth grips and flat rivets, fully functional bayonet catch, and excellent early swivel-hanger steel scabbard, this is a particularly appealing Krag bayonet from the height of the rifle’s active U.S. service. Its date gives it a strong Philippine-American War era association, while its condition and complete scabbard make it well suited to a collection focused on the Krag rifle, American overseas expansion, the Philippine-American War, or turn-of-the-century U.S. military equipment.
