Original U.S. Percussion Hunting Gun made with British Trade Lock and Springfield Type Barrel dated 1834
Item Description
Original Item: One of a Kind. Here we have a very interesting weapon, a very nice mid 19th Century U.S. Hunting Gun, made from "parts on hand", a very common thing during that period of U.S. history. Parts from obsolete guns were perfectly good for making arms for people on the frontier. This gun was made using a British "Trade" percussion lock, marked LONDON / WARRANTED on the lock plate. At the time the U.S. gunmaking industry was not nearly as established as that of Britain, and many locks were imported.
The barrel on the other hand is definitely of U.S. manufacture, and is a Springfield type .69" musket barrel, measuring 38 1/2" in length. It has U.S. Arsenal P and Eagle's Head proofs, as well as P H and a date of 1834. We assume that it was shortened from an original length of 42 inches, the standard length of U.S. musket barrels until 1855. Definitely an interesting barrel, worthy of further research.
The hunting gun measures 54 1/2 inches in overall length, and is fairly standard in form, with brass fittings on a lovely walnut stock. There is a stress crack on the right side of the butt stock, but it does not go all the way through. There is also a crack in front of the lock, which commonly occurs due to temperature and moisture related expansion. The gun does come with it's original ramrod, however the sling swivels appear to have been removed long ago. The front swivel location was plugged with wood, and the bolster on the barrel has leg go, so the front of the stock is no longer attached to the barrel, and can be pulled away slightly.
The lock is still fully functional, holding at half cock and firing at full. The bore is clear, though definitely dirty, with a bit of cobwebs as well.
A very nice mid 19th century U.S. hunting gun, great for hanging on a wall on display!
