Original U.S. Pennsylvania Percussion Smoothbore Gun with British Lock by Joseph Golcher c. 1840

Item Description

Original Item: Only one available. This started life as a Rifle of a caliber smaller than .50", probably around .39". After the rifling became worn, it was smooth bored to be used as a fowling piece, like many other Pennsylvania rifles.

The rifle was assembled in the United States using a British Trade percussion lock made by JOSEPH GOLCHER of KING STREET, DARLASTON in STAFFORDSHIRE, ENGLAND, who worked from 1834 to 1865. We estimate that this octagonal barrel rifle was made about 1840.

The barrel measures 30" and the gun is 46" in overall length. It has brass mounts Butt plate, trigger guard, side plate and front wedge escutcheons.
The percussion back action lock is signed by the English gun maker JOSEPH GOLPHER in an oval, as discussed above.

Typical of the period for a frontier america gunsmith to build a Pennsylvania style long rifle using a British Trade Lock. In storage for a great period, comes with wood ram rod. The front barrel wedge is missing, but could easily be replaced.
