  • Original Item: Only One Available. Just purchased at a recent military auction! This is a very nice heavy barreled "Pennsylvania" percussion hunting rifle, often referred to as a "Kentucky" rifle. The design developed in Pennsylvania, and then spread down the Ohio River Valley to Kentucky, where it was very popular. This is a great example, with a lovely "Flame" figured half stock and all brass mounts.. The rifle features a 33 inch long octagonal barrel with 6 groove rifling and a bore of .45", one of the larger sizes seen for Pennsylvania rifles. Overall length is 48 1/2" and the barrel is relatively heavy for accurate shooting, much like "bench rest" rifles of the day.

As with many rifles produced during this period, it is fitted with a "trade lock", which in case is marked PHILAD'A on the bottom, for manufacture in Philadelphia, PA. The top line has been partly overstruck and ablated, so unfortunately we cannot make out what it originally said. It was very common for gunmakers of the period to purchase ready made locks as a way of saving money and time. There is a faint maker mark on the barrel, but it is quite worn, and we cannot make out what it says.

The rifle is in overall very good condition, with wear commensurate with age and service. It features a simple rear notch sight with a front blade sight, though there are signs that originally some different sights were present. The bore is in excellent condition, showing clear lands and grooves with a bright finish. There is just a bit of wear and past oxidation, so it definitely has seen some level of use. We checked the lock, and it holds correctly at half cock, firing at full.

The stock is fitted with a lovely patch box on the right side, which is opened by pressing on the forward lower end of the butt plate. There is also a cheek piece on the left side, with an inlaid brass "hunter's star". The cleaning rod under the barrel is brass fitted wood, and is actually an original piece! Even better, there are still the original attachments still present, stored inside the patch box! We almost never get the original tools that come with these. There is even a replacement cap nipple cone!

A very nice Pennsylvania Percussion Hunting rifle in very good condition with some great accessories. Ready to display!
