Item Description
Original Item: Only One Available. Just purchased at a recent military auction! Here is a very nice octagonal barreled "Pennsylvania" style rifle, often referred to as a "Kentucky" Rifle. The design developed in Pennsylvania, and then spread down the Ohio River Valley to Kentucky, where it was very popular. It has a heavy octagonal barrel in .43" caliber with 7 groove rifling, one of the usual calibers we see these in.
The style and appointments are very typical of the rifles made in the Lehigh Valley area of Eastern Pennsylvania, and is marked clearly on the lock by the maker / retailer:
G.M & G.R
JUSTICE
We have not been able to find much at all about this maker, which could also be a retailer or importer. Many of these Pennsylvania rifles used "trade" locks, which could be imported from others states, or more often from England.
We estimate that this octagonal barrel rifle was made about 1840, and features all brass mounts with minimal ornamentation. The lock is the most decorated part of the entire rifle, with lovely foliate engraving on the plate and hammer. The full length stock is made from very attractive 'Tiger' maple, with flame figuring from muzzle to butt. This is a bit hard to see due to the dark finish in areas, but it is definitely there. There is some cracking around the lock screw escutcheon, and what looks to be some repairs in front of the lock plate.
As with most Pennsylvania rifles, this example is fitted with a "set trigger", where depressing the rear trigger first until it clicks and just touching the front trigger discharges the weapon, hopefully with great accuracy. It is fully functional at present, and the rear trigger must be "set" before the lock will fire at all. There is no half cock position due to this. The bore is in good condition, with with clear rifling and a partly bright finish, showing moderate wear. There is a simple wooden cleaning rod installed, which looks to be a period replacement with a metal end cap.
A very nice example of a mid 19th Century "Pennsylvania" rifle with a lovely full length figured stock, ready to add to your collection!
