  • Original Item: Only one available. This came to us recently from an Old U.S. Collection that had been in storage for more than 100 years. Here is an octagonal barreled "Kentucky" style rifle, which more correctly is known as a Pennsylvania Rifle. It is in one of the standard calibers we usually see these in, .43", and has a heavy octagonal barrel. The rifle was built in the United States using a percussion lock made marked G. GOULCHER, who worked in Darlaston in Staffordshire from 1830 until 1872, with his son taking over in 1864.

We estimate that this octagonal barrel rifle was made about 1840,  and it features all brass mounts except for the iron trigger guard, complete with carved in cheek piece on left side of the Butt Stock. The full length stock wood at first glance looks to be tiger maple, but closer inspection shows that stain was dripped down the wood to give it a "faux" flamed look.

We feel this rifle has always been in percussion, and is not a conversion from flintlock. Interestingly the rifle is fitted with a "set trigger", where depressing the rear trigger first until it clicks and just touching the front trigger discharges the weapon, hopefully with great accuracy. It is functional at present, but the tumbler is worn, so pulling back the hammer too far can cause the main spring to slip off. It is also a bit finicky due to age.

Great for over the fire place in your Log Cabin this is an old lady who certainly did her bit in the 1830's to 1860's. Ready to display!
