Item Description
Original Item: Only one available. Here is an octagonal barreled "Kentucky" style rifle, which more correctly is known as a Pennsylvania Rifle. It looks to be in .43" caliber, a very common size for these rifles, and has a heavy octagonal barrel with six groove rifling. The rifle was built in the United States using a back action percussion trade lock, which is marked A.W. SPIES / WARRANTED. Research indicates that this maker worked in New York.
We estimate that this octagonal barrel rifle was made about 1835, and it features all brass mounts except for the nickel barrel wedge escutcheon. It also features a plate on the back of the wrist, as well as an inlaid 8 pointed star on the right butt stock, with a kneeling buck inlay on the left butt stock. The lock is also engraved with a lovely bird hunting scene. The stock itself is in great shape, with a lovely aged walnut color.
Looking at the stock and lock plate, we feel that this rifle was made as a percussion lock, as the back action locks did not work well with flintlock systems. The lock still functions correctly, holding at half stock and firing at full. The bore is nice and shows clear rifling, though definitely needs some cleaning. The rifle also still has both front and rear sights, though the rear sight was moved at some point. It also has a wooden ramrod, though it is just for display.
A real part of American Frontier History. Ready to display!
