Item Description
Original Item: Only One Available. Here is a very nice octagonal barreled "Kentucky" style rifle, which more correctly is known as a Pennsylvania Rifle. It is marked faintly on the top of the barrel with H. E. LEMAN / LANCASTER PA, along with WARRANTED. The heavy octagonal barrel is 35" long and the rifle measures 50" in overall length. The gun is full stocked, something we do not see often with this type of rifle, and it is all brass mounted, with a lovely brass patch box on the left side of the butt stock.
HENRY E LEMAN worked in Lancaster from 1812 until 1887, and we feel this rifle started life as a Percussion weapon, and not a conversion from Flintlock. It was however converted at some point to a 20 bore fowling piece, most likely because the original rifling wore away. We have seen many Pennsylvania rifles modified in a similar manner, and it was an effective modification to increase the service life of a quality percussion arm.
The stock is very nice, and has a good amount of lovely "tiger stripe" figuring, found in the abundant maple in the area. There are some repairs around the wrist area, which looks to have split at some point, possibly multiple times. There is a nice cheek piece carved into the left butt stock. It still retains its original wooden ramrod. We checked the lock, and it is fully functional, holding at half cock and firing at full.
A most attractive and interesting Pennsylvania Long Rifle, later converted to a fowler for further use. Ready to display!
