Original Item: Only One Available. This is a very nice ornately decorated .22 Rimfire revolver, made in very much the style of the Hopkins & Allen Mfg. Co. of Norwich, Connecticut. It also shows some similarities to early .22 Colt designs. The Rollin White patent on drilled through cylinders, which had allowed Smith & Wesson to dominate the cartridge revolver market early on, expired in 1872, resulting in a flood of "new" designs. In reality, many smaller companies had attempted to go around the patent during the 1860s, some more successfully than others.
This revolver does not have any clear maker or patent markings, just X.C.D. stamped on the top of the barrel strap. It is very possible that this is one of those revolvers made in the 1860s, purposely unmarked to avoid lawsuits from Smith & Wesson. We have looked around and unfortunately not been able to find any information on this maker.
The serial number on this example is 1029, found on the barrel, the cylinder, the cylinder arbor pin, on the frame under the grips, and on the inside of BOTH grip scales. That makes this a very nice "ALL MATCHING" example, with no parts swapped out over the years! Condition is very good, with much of the original nickel plating still present and bright, and fantastic engraving over almost the entire revolver. The rosewood grips are lovely, with great grain and "streaking" around the grain. They still retain almost all of their original "piano varnish" finish.
The revolver cycles great, with good indexing and a firm cylinder lockup. We did not notice any of the usual finicky behavior seen on many old revolvers. The bore is in good condition, showing clear lands and grooves, but also past oxidation and fouling. The revolver breaks down correctly, though the lock on the arbor pin is worn, so it can pulled out without pressing down the release.
A very nice late 19th century rimfire revolver in great shape. Ready to display!
