  • Original Item. One-of-a-Kind. This is a tremendous captured Philippine Juramentado Barong, a type of Bolo, which was taken by Captain Samuel Lyon, Company H, 27th Infantry Regiment. The Barong, which has been struck by a bullet, has a tag with the following inscription:

    Bullet Struck Bolo Taken
From the Grip of a Juramentado
    Shot 36 Times before Collapsing
At Our Lines near Bayang P.I.
    Capt. S. Lyon U.S.A.

Juramentado is a term used in Philippine history to describe a male Moro swordsman who would attack and kill soldiers and police as a form of jihad. The word comes from Spanish and means "bound by oath". So it would make complete sense that this warrior would charge onwards through 36 rounds of .30-40 Krag if it meant being able to take one enemy with him.

Captain Samuel Powell Lyon would go on to command the 804th Pioneer Infantry Regiment during World War I, retiring as a Colonel. He passed away on November 14th, 1939 at the age of 70.

The barong measures 20⅝” in overall length with a 13¼” blade. The tip is a bit dented, and the bullet strike is very characteristic. The wooden handle is in good shape with some cracks as shown, as well as a dowel repair.

A fantastic captured piece from the Battle of Bayang. Comes ready for further research and display.

The Battle of Bayang was the first major engagement of the Moro Rebellion. It was a punitive expedition led by Colonel Frank D. Baldwin in retaliation for murders committed by Moros in Malabang and Parang on the island of Mindanao.  Col. Baldwin led seven companies of the 27th Infantry and the 25th Battery Light Artillery against the Moros on the south shore of Lake Lanao, the village of Bayang in particular.  The Americans took Fort Pandapatan and the fort of Datu of Binidayan, killing the Sultan of Bayang in the process.

    Approximate Dimensions:
