  • Original Item: Only One Available. This is a very nice U.S. M-1819 Flintlock pistol made by Simeon North in Middletown, Connecticut, which was later converted to percussion, as many were. North had a 53 year relationship with the U.S. War Department, and the contract for the Model 1819 pistols was one of the last contracts North had for martial pistols from the U.S. Government. The model 1819 has a longer barrel than the previous model 1816, and features a "captured" ramrod which cannot be easily lost, as well as a half-cock safety on the lock. Many of these pistols were converted to the much more reliable and simple percussion ignition system later in the 19th century, such as this example.

The model measures 15 1/2" overall with a .54 Caliber 10" barrel. It has all iron mounts including a large skull crusher butt cap, iron trigger guard, side plate and large barrel band. The breech of the barrel is proof marked J? / P / U.S.. The second letter of the inspector's initials looks to be M or N, however it is not clear. There are several different inspectors this could stand for.

This Lock marking is fully legible, and one of the best we've seen on a pistol by North:

    S. NORTH
    U (Eagle) S
    MIDLTN CONN.

The wood  stock bears the ghost of it's Government inspector's Cartouche in an oval just behind the side plate. Steel and iron surfaces shows old staining from rust and pitting but the pistol is still in tight working condition, with the lock holding properly at half cock, and firing at full. The main spring is however a bit weak. It also looks like the pistol had a half cock safety, which was later removed. The remnants of the original brass powder pan can still be seen on the top of the lock plate.

A very nice example of an Early U.S. military pistol, later converted to percussion. Ready to display!
