Original U.S. Model 1819 Flintlock Pistol by Simeon North of Middletown Connecticut - dated 1822

Item Description

Original Item: Only One Available. This is a totally correct well patinated U.S. M-1819 Flintlock pistol made by Simeon North in Middletown, Connecticut, still in the original flintlock configuration. North had a 53 year relationship with the U.S. War Department, and the contract for the Model 1819 pistols was one of the last contracts North had for martial pistols from the U.S. Government. The model 1819 has a longer barrel than the previous model 1816, and features a "captured" ramrod which cannot be easily lost, as well as a half-cock safety on the lock. Many of these pistols were converted to percussion later in the 19th century, but this one escaped such treatment.

The model measures 15 1/2" overall with a .54 Caliber 10" barrel. It has all iron mounts including a large skull crusher butt cap, iron trigger guard, side plate and large barrel band. The breech of the barrel is proof marked JDJ / P / U.S., which records indicate is "J.D. Johwson", who inspected "M1819 North Pistol Barrels 1819-1822". It is possible however that the last name was misspelled in records, as "Johnson" makes much more sense for a surname.

This Lock marking is still mostly legible, but definitely shows wear from oxidation and subsequent cleaning:

S. NORTH
U (Eagle) S
MIDLTN CONN.

The tail of the lock plate under the safety is dated with production year 1822. There is also a legible oval LS cartouches on the left side of the stock, for Luther Sage, who inspected pistols from North, Waters, and other makers during the 1813-1836 period. Steel and iron surfaces shows old staining from rust and pitting but the pistol is still in tight working condition, with the lock holding properly at half cock, and firing at full. The safety is also fully functional. It looks like it saw long service, possibly exposed to the elements, resulting in overall oxidation.

The stock is in good shape, showing a lovely dark color, and shows the expected wear from use. There is some cracking to the rear of the lock plate, a typical location to see this. There is also a good amount of "curl" to the grain on the pistol grip area, making it a really attractive example.

A very nice example of an Early U.S. military pistol, ready to display!
