Item Description
Original Item: Only One Available. This is a totally correct U.S. M-1819 Flintlock pistol made by Simeon North in Middletown, Connecticut, still in the original flintlock configuration. North had a 53 year relationship with the U.S. War Department, and the contract for the Model 1819 pistols was one of the last contracts North had for martial pistols from the U.S. Government. The model 1819 has a longer barrel than the previous model 1816, and features a "captured" ramrod which cannot be easily lost, as well as a half-cock safety on the lock. Many of these pistols were converted to percussion later in the 19th century, but this one escaped such treatment.
The model measures 15 1/2" overall with a .54 Caliber 10" barrel. It has all iron mounts including a large skull crusher butt cap, iron trigger guard, side plate and large barrel band. The breech of the barrel is proof marked JDJ / P / U.S., which records indicate is "J.D. Johwson", who inspected "M1819 North Pistol Barrels 1819-1822". It is possible however that the last name was misspelled in records, as "Johnson" makes much more sense for a surname.
This Lock marking is still mostly legible, but definitely shows wear from oxidation and subsequent cleaning:
S. NORTH
U (Eagle) S
MIDLTN CONN.
There would usually be a date on the tail of the lock plate, however it has been worn off of this example. The wood stock bears the ghost of it's Government inspector's Cartouche in an oval just behind the side plate. Steel and iron surfaces shows old staining from rust and pitting but the pistol is still in tight working condition, with the lock holding properly at half cock, and firing at full. However, the safety is currently malfunctioning, and often the hammer gets stuck at half cock.
The stock is in good shape, showing a lovely dark color. It does have some cracking on on both sides by the butt cap, and also some by the lower lock screw, which is a very common place to see cracks.
A very nice example of an Early U.S. military pistol, ready to display!
