Original Item: Only One Available. This is an original U.S. Model 1819 .54 caliber flintlock martial pistol manufactured by Simeon North of Middletown, Connecticut, and dated 1821. It remains in its original unconverted flintlock configuration and retains the distinctive captured ramrod, iron furniture, half cock safety, Federal lock markings, barrel inspection stamps, and a legible LS inspector cartouche in the stock.

This is an antique black powder firearm manufactured before 1899. Under federal law, it may generally be owned within the United States without a special license or permit and does not require transfer through a Federal Firearms Licensee. However, state and local laws may vary. This firearm is sold solely as a historical collector’s item and has not been test fired or inspected for firing safety by a professional gunsmith. Any mechanical or bore observations provided below describe only its present condition and should not be interpreted as confirmation that the firearm is safe to load or fire. The Model 1819 was one of the important early U.S. martial pistols produced under government contract by Simeon North. North had a 53 year relationship with the U.S. War Department, and the contract for the Model 1819 pistols was one of the last contracts North had for martial pistols from the U.S. Government. Compared with the preceding Model 1816, it incorporated a longer barrel and a captured ramrod designed to remain attached to the pistol during loading and cleaning. Many surviving examples were later altered to percussion, making an unconverted flintlock example particularly desirable as a representative of the original pattern.

The pistol measures approximately 15 1/2" overall and has a 10" barrel in .54 caliber. It is fitted with all iron furniture, including the heavy skull crusher style butt cap, iron trigger guard, side plate, and large barrel band.

The JDJ marking is attributed to inspector John D. Johnson, associated with inspection of Model 1819 North pistol barrels during the 1819-1822 period.

The lock retains most of its original markings. The Federal eagle is substantially visible, though the head is faint, and the maker and address read:

The upper right portion of the maker name beneath the pan is worn, but enough survives to identify the original Simeon North marking. The tail of the lock plate is dated:

cartouche, attributed to inspector Luther Sage, who inspected pistols from North, Waters, and other makers during the 1813-1836 period.

The steel and iron surfaces are mostly polished bright and show scattered evidence of old peppered oxidation that has since been cleaned. There is no obvious indication in the supplied inspection of a major modern restoration, and the pistol retains an attractive aged appearance.

The lock remains tight and presently functions correctly. It holds securely at half cock and releases at full cock, and the separate safety mechanism is also functional. These observations describe only the pistol’s present mechanical condition and should not be interpreted as confirmation that it is safe to load or fire.

The stock is in good condition with a deep red brown color beneath an old waxed finish and displays particularly attractive grain. It shows the expected dents, scratches, and handling wear from long use, but no major structural cracks, missing sections, or repaired breaks are noted.

The captured ramrod remains present, is in very good condition, and operates correctly.

With its original unconverted flintlock configuration, 1821 dated Simeon North lock, JDJ / P / U.S. barrel markings, LS inspector cartouche, captured ramrod, complete iron furniture, functional half cock safety, and attractive walnut stock, this is a strong example of the U.S. Model 1819 martial pistol. The worn portion of the maker marking, faint eagle head, cleaned peppered oxidation, and normal stock wear are all fully disclosed. It would fit especially well in a Simeon North, early U.S. martial pistol, Model 1819, Federal period, or advanced American flintlock firearms collection.
