  • Original Item: Only One Available. This is a first for us here at IMA! Here we have a lovely MIAMI BEACH POLICE marked gas case, marked DANGER GAS on the top, which is intended for riot control use. It measures 29 1/2"L x 12"H x 8"W, and contains a lovely example of the “FRG” 37mm 1.5 Caliber L-5 Federal Riot Gun, along with a variety of inert gas and irritant rounds for the gun. Also in the case are inert "Tear Gas" and "Riot Gas CS" grenades, two of each. The inert items look to be empty samples, intended for display, made from spent cartridges long ago.

Unloaded or dummy grenades, artillery shell casings, and similar devices, which are cut or drilled in an BATF-approved manner so that they cannot be used as ammunition components for destructive devices, are not considered NFA weapons. This example is in total compliance and is NOT AVAILABLE FOR EXPORT.

The FRG in this set is the more simple L-5 variety, and still has complete and legible markings on the left side of the receiver, which read:-

1.5 CAL. FEDERAL GAS RIOT GUN
    FEDERAL LABORATORIES INC
    PITTSBURGH, PA.
    MADE IN U.S.A.

These are partly obscured, as there is the base for a SIGHT, GRENADE LAUNCHER, M15 attached to the receiver, which would definitely allow for accurate sighting of the FRG. It is in very good shape, and the liquid filled level is still fully intact. The other side of the receiver has a small inscription from some point in the life of the gun which reads:

    Property of
    Brown Co.
    Sheriff Dept.

These guns were in use nationwide, and guns were routinely sold and resold between different law enforcement agencies. This looks to have seen only light use, and as far as we can tell is still fully functional. It breaks open correctly, with the ejector presenting, and the trigger still dry fires, though we do not know if the firing pin is intact. Opening the action shows the number 607 on the top of the lower frame, which we believe is the serial number.

A fantastic Police Gas Gun Case, perfect for any static law enforcement display!

The Federal Riot Gun (FRG) is a gas gun made by Federal Laboratories Inc., designed to fire non-lethal munitions. Its ammunition includes 37 and 38mm baton and tear gas rounds. The baton rounds were cylindrical, rubber projectiles.

The most popular model, 37-mm M201-Z, has a distinctive ringed barrel for a sling swivel, which can be clearly seen in the photos, as well as a ladder sight mounted on the back of the receiver. The L-5 model is more streamlined, with a smooth barrel and no sight on the receiver, though they could be added aftermarket.

Introduced in the 1930s by Federal Laboratories Inc., of Pennsylvania, the FRG became the standard riot gun used by the British Army throughout The Troubles in Northern Ireland.

A single-shot weapon, which breaks open by unlocking a catch at the top, it has since been replaced in British use by the multiple-shot ARWEN 37 revolver. It was also issued by the Canadian Army, subsequently the Canadian Armed Forces. It had been used by the South African Police Service during the apartheid era. Spare parts could not be purchased, due to the 1977 arms embargo, so a domestically produced weapon, the "Stopper" replaced the Federal Riot Gun.
