  • Original Item. Only One Available. The US Model 1842 Musket was a .69 caliber musket manufactured and used in the United States during the 19th century. It is a continuation of the Model 1816 line of muskets but is generally referred to as its own model number rather than just a variant of the Model 1816.

The Model 1842 was the last U.S. smoothbore musket. Many features that had been retrofitted into the Model 1840 were standard on the Model 1842. The Model 1842 was the first primary U.S. muskets to be produced with a percussion lock; however, most of the Model 1840 flintlocks ended up being converted to percussion locks before reaching the field. The percussion cap system was vastly superior to the flintlock, being much more reliable and much more resistant to weather.

This is an outstanding example which appears to be an earlier Mexican-American War example, as the leather scabbard is the earlier Model 1839 example with the buff white belt loop, the first we have ever offered. This bayonet has some of the original finish still present, and a lovely aged patina. The socket is not deformed at all, with a functional lock. It still has the original U.S. marking on the blade ricasso.

The bayonet comes complete with its original leather scabbard, with attached white buff belt frog. The scabbard matches the condition and wear of the bayonet perfectly, and they have undoubtedly been together the last 150 years! The frog is still retained by stitching. The leather is stiff and hardened in places as is expected. There is a brass finial on the bottom, an indication of Federal Issue.

Overall, a very nice U.S. Mexican-American War bayonet, complete with original scabbard. Ready to fit your Springfield Musket.
