Original U.S. Mexican-American War Era Etched Officer's Eagle Head Sword with Ivory Grip and Brass Scabbard

Item Description

Original Item: Only One Available. This is a very nice example of a well worn early American “Eagle Head” Militia Officers Sword with the original and correct scabbard. The sword does not have manufacturer's information present.

This example does appear to be Mexican-American War era (1846-1848) used and is in great, field worn condition. The sword is all brass mounted with a standard "P" hand guard and a a very nice rounded pommel. The sword does show wear with the brass fitting being loose and the ivory like grip loose as well.

Overall it is 35 inches long, with a 29.5 inch long engraved single edge curved blade. Each side has a fuller towards the spine, with some light engraving on the first 1/3 of the blade. The old inlay is still visible in places, with a large section where the original "fire blue" finish is still present. There is also some light staining and surface pitting on the last half of the blade, as well as near the cross guard, but nothing major.

The included scabbard appears to be original to the sword and is in fair condition. The all brass and steel scabbard does appear to have been painted. The brass mounted hardware is still present with both suspension rings and little of the original silver wash.

All in all this is a fantastic sword that appears to have seen many years of faithful use. Comes more than ready for further research and display.
