Original Item: Only One Available. First seen in 1794, the "Eagle Pommel" swords were a fixture of the early years of the United States. At the time there were no standardized officer sword patterns, and it was mainly left up to the officer on the type of sword they wanted, as well as the level of craftsmanship.
This lovely example has a 32 inch long blade, with a single wide fuller on each side extending half way down the blade. The body of the blade for most of the fuller is a lovely "Fire Blued" color, with gold highlighted engravings.Like many early swords, there is no visible makers mark. The blade definitely has some rust issues, which have degraded the finish a bit, but it is still quite attractive.
The sword has an elaborate cast and chased brass hilt with a fierce eagle pommel. It has a large "scallop shell" guard with the American Eagle, as well as "Columbia" wearing a roman style helmet, with a U.S. Shield. At the bottom of the scene it can be seen that Columbia has the British Crown under her feet, signifying the defeat of Britain. The grips are very attractive, and are carved bone with floral brass motifs on the sides. The guard and grip are not very tight to the blade, but there are no signs of it falling apart.
This is a truly gorgeous and ornate Mexican-American War era Eagle Head Officer’s sword, ready for further research and display.
