  • Original Item: Only One Available. The M61 Vulcan is a hydraulically, electrically or pneumatically driven, six-barrel, air-cooled, electrically fired Gatling-style rotary cannon which fires 20 mm rounds at an extremely high rate (typically 6,000 rounds per minute). The M61 and its derivatives have been the principal cannon armament of United States military fixed-wing aircraft for fifty years. This includes the fighters that they supply to Allies such as the United Kingdom.

This is a very nice condition Barrel Muzzle Clamp for the M61A1 Vulcan, which also serves as a flash hider and muzzle brake. There were numerous configurations of the cannon, and numerous muzzle attachments, which helped keep the barrels in place while spinning. This example is very nice, though it has probably been repainted. It has original military stock numbers stamped into the housing and the barrel lock mechanism/clamp. Measures 18 1/2 inches long, and 5 1/4 inches in diameter.

The collector we purchased this from indicated that it was specifically from a McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom II, which was a fixed wing tandem two-seat, twin-engine, all-weather, long-range supersonic jet interceptor and fighter-bomber originally developed for the United States Navy. The design was modular, which allowed the aircraft to be configured in any number of ways using various "gun pod" based weapons. As it was, the aircraft did not have any built in armament, and was intended mainly as a bombing and missile platform. However, the need for fighting other aircraft proved to still need some type of cannon, so a gunpod was developed using the M61 Vulcan.  We have period photographs showing this exact configuration of barrel clamp on F4 gunpods.

A very interesting piece of military history, ready to add to your collection and display!
