  • Original Item: One Only. Much like our European cousins in the 1880s, the U.S.Army started to adopted spiked pith helmets, often in white, with all brass mounts and occasionally plumes.

This particular example is from THE 8TH MASSACHUSETTS VOLUNTEER MILITIA Constructed of hard canvas over cork/pith with leather headband and all brass mounts and includes original white leather chin strap.

The brass helmet plate displayes the U.S. Spread Eagle emblem over a ring marked MASS.VOL. MILITIA with an 8 in the center. There is also a 19 stenciled on the inside, probably the soldier it was worn by. Known as the Model of 1881, this helmet is still in fine condition and ready to display
