Original U.S. M-1877 31st Infantry Staff Officers White Plumed Pith Helmet

Item Description

Original Item: One Only. Dating from just before the Spanish American War of the 1890s, this is a White plumed Dress Helmet from a Staff officer in the 31st Infantry Regiment.

It has an elaborate helmet front plate (badge) depicting a stand of arms, lances and Cannons with the U.S. Eagle over a circle displaying the Regiments numeral of 31. It also still has the original paper size label marked 7 on the leather liner band, and the adjusting string is intact, making this an excellent example of this helmet.

The top mount is also quite detailed with oak leaves surrounding a central circle where the horse tail plume spike is attached. The side buttons on each side over the ear show crossed rifles, indicating that this was an infantry regiment.

Often referred to as "Sun Hats, Pith Helmets or topees" these helmets were ideal for hot weather as found in Cuba. In very nice condition complete with leather head band and ready to display.
