Item Description
Original Item: Only One Available. This is a lovely "Pennsylvania" flintlock long rifle, often referred to as a "Kentucky Rifle". The design developed in Pennsylvania, and then spread down the Ohio River Valley to Kentucky, where it was very popular. This example is typical of those made in Lehigh County, PA, the area surrounding Allentown. It features all brass mountings on a thin profile walnut stock. The rifle features a 44 3/4 inch long octagonal barrel with a bore of about .38", which is a typical size seem on these rifles. It features six-groove rifling, and does not look to have seen extensive use. Overall length is a long 60 inches, and it has a lovely curve to the stock.
The rifle is all brass mounted, and features a lovely patch box on the left side of the stock. This is unlocked by pressing up on a small iron tab that protrudes through the butt plate. Patch boxes of this type with this shape finial are attributed to maker John Snyder (Schneider, Sneider) of the Lehigh Valley area, though there are no markings on this rifle that we can see, save for what looks to be B·CHR?T, though the first letter could be a D. There is a small German-style cheek piece on the left side of the stock, which has a lovely "Half Moon" inlay on it, and there is also an oval escutcheon on the back of the wrist.
As with many firearms produced during this period, it is fitted with a "trade lock", which does not have any markings we can see, though it does have some past pitting on the central portion. These were often left unmarked so that the retailer could mark them. The design does have a frizzen reinforcement bridle, however there is only a single screw behind the hammer, so it is a very early early design. We checked the functionality, and the lock holds correctly at half cock, firing at full.
The rifle is in good condition, with a lovely patina of age. The barrel and lock have matured to a lovely dark patina, with no signs of major oxidation or past pitting. There is some powder burn around the touch hole on the barrel, however it does not look to have seen extensive use. The barrel is fitted with simple notch sights, which look to be original. We checked the bore, and it is in excellent condition, with crisp six groove rifling and a bright finish. We cannot see any major wear or oxidation on the interior.
The stock has a lovely curve to it, with no major damage, though there is some cracking and missing wood along the barrel on the fore stock. This is common due to how thin the wood is in this area There is a brass fitted wooden ramrod under the barrel, which looks to be original, however the brass fitting is incomplete.
A great Pennsylvania Flintlock with a with a great patina of age and a fantastic bore. Ready to hang on the wall!
