  • Original Item: Only One Available. This is a very nice matured "Pennsylvania" flintlock fowling piece, often referred to as a "Kentucky Fowler". The design developed in Pennsylvania, and then spread down the Ohio River Valley to Kentucky, where it was very popular. It features all brass mountings on a thin profile flamed maple stock. The fowler features a 46 ¾ inch long part octagonal barrel with a bore of about 0.493", which does not look to be a bored out rifle. This would be considered "38 Bore", very popular for small game fowl, and only being octagonal near the breech definitely would keep the weight down. Overall length is an impressive 62 inches.

As with many firearms produced during this period, it is fitted with a "trade lock", which does not have any markings remaining. These were often left unmarked so that the retailer could mark them. It features a flash pan with a frizzen reinforcement bridle, and two screws behind the hammer, so it is definitely a modern side lock. It has a half and full cock position, but will fire at either. Unlike most we see, it was not later converted to percussion, and is still in the original flintlock configuration.

The fowler is in good condition, with a lovely patina of age. The metalwork shows some surface oxidation and wear, but no major damage or rusting. The barrel is fitted with simple notch sights, which look to be original. The flame maple stock is lovely, showing no major cracking or other damage, though it was definitely shortened at some point by about a foot, as it used to go all the way up to near the muzzle, and the barrel wedge eyelet is still present there. There is a brass fitted wooden ramrod under the barrel, but it looks to be a period replacement.

A very nice Pennsylvania Flintlock Fowling Piece with a lovely flamed stock. Ready to display!
