Original Item: Only One Available. This is the standard design for an early American made Militia leather cartridge box. These types were seen in the Federal “Legion of the United States” period and were used up until the War of 1812 and later, but the eagle plate on this example was specifically used by the Legion of the United States. This example retains the partial eagle plate and the thin brass plate along the bottom, very rare to find with both pieces.
This “Belly Box” has a wooden block with 24 cylindrical holes for chargers, with all holes in good order. The front flap is in great shape though the eagle plate is missing the head, the tip of one of the wings, and some of the arrows. Otherwise it is quite excellent. The lower plate appears fully retained. Both plates are affixed with the correct nails and have certainly always been present on the box. The flap is still strong and very thick, with a complete securing strap still stitched on! Unfortunately the knob or leather strap that combined with it to secure the box closed is gone.
The back of the box is missing one of the belt loops as shown. Each of the two sides were originally affixed with 5-7 tacks, but they are all gone. The leather is coming disconnected on the front and back of the block, so exercise caution when handling it.
An extremely scarce box, measuring roughly 8 x 3½ x 5½”, from the 1790s. In excellent condition for being 230+ years old! Ready for display!
