A badge is a device or accessory, often containing the insignia of an organization, which is presented or displayed to indicate some feat of service, a special accomplishment, a symbol of authority granted by taking an oath (e.g., police and fire), a sign of legitimate employment or student status, or as a simple means of identification. They are also used in advertising, publicity, and for branding purposes. Police badges date back to medieval times when knights wore a coat of arms representing their allegiances and loyalty.

Badges can be made from metal, plastic, leather, textile, rubber, etc., and they are commonly attached to clothing, bags, footwear, vehicles, home electrical equipment, etc. Textile badges or patches can be either woven or embroidered, and can be attached by gluing, ironing-on, sewing or applique.

Badges have become highly collectable: in the UK, for example, the Badge Collectors' Circle has been in existence since 1980.

The Badges In This Lot:
- Illinois State Police Cap Badge: The Illinois State Police (ISP) was established in 1922. ISP is responsible for traffic safety on more than 300,000 miles of total roadway, including 2,185 miles of Interstate Highways and 15,969 miles of State Highways. In 2021, the ISP Division of Patrol handled more than 48,000 traffic crashes, conducted more than 68,000 motor carrier safety inspections, and made more than 4,500 DUI arrest. The Division of Criminal Investigation opened 930 violent crime cases, opened 124 homicide cases, seized 1,590 firearms, handled 64 public integrity cases, and ensured 595 Firearm Owner Identification (FOID) card holders were in compliance. Currently, almost 3,000 sworn and civilian personnel make up ISP, one of the most well trained and forward-thinking police agencies in the United States.

- 1930s Amarillo, Texas Police Badge: In 1913, Amarillo became the first Texas city and the fifth in United States to use the council-manager form of municipal government, with all governmental powers resting in a legislative body, called a council (before 2014, it was called a commission). Amarillo's commission is composed of five elected commissioners, one of whom is the mayor of the city. The mayor and each commissioner serves a two-year term. The role of the commission is to pass ordinances and resolutions, adopt regulations, and appoint city officials, including the city manager. While the mayor serves as a presiding officer of the commission, the city manager is the administrative head of the municipal government and is responsible for the administration of all departments. The city commission holds its regular meetings on Tuesday of each week. We are uncertain as to when the police department was formed in this area but we imagine it was around this time.

- City of New York Detectives’ Endowment Association Badge: The Detectives Endowment Association of the City of New York is one of three major police unions representing police officers of the New York City Police Department. The other two being the Police Benevolent Association and Sergeants Benevolent Association.

The Detectives' Endowment Association was founded in 1917 to represent active and retired detectives of the New York City Police Department. In 1963 it was granted independent collective bargaining rights to negotiate on behalf of its members.

In 2013 the Union won a case in Manhattan Supreme Court over pay discrepancies involving the salary raises for detectives and police officers. Their case was rejected by the Board of Collective Bargaining, but a judge ruled in their favor and the detectives were promised back pay.

In June 2020 three Bronx officers who visited a Manhattan Shake Shack accused the store's employees of poisoning them, saying that a toxic substance had been added to their drinks. The Detectives' Endowment Association went so far as to issue a safety alert on Twitter, claiming that the officers had been "intentionally poisoned." A full investigation by the NYPD vindicated the employees and determined that an improperly cleaned machine left a residue of bleach or a cleaning agent in the officers' beverages. Bleach is a toxin that, in itself, can cause harm to any individual that ingests it.

- Sheriff’s Deputy New Castle County, Delaware Badge: New Castle County is the northernmost of the three counties of the U.S. state of Delaware (New Castle, Kent, and Sussex). As of the 2020 census, the population was 570,719, making it the most populous county in Delaware, with nearly 60% of the state's population of 989,948. The county seat is Wilmington, which is also the state's most populous city.

New Castle County is included in the Philadelphia-Camden-Wilmington, PA-NJ-DE-MD Metropolitan Statistical Area. The county is named after William Cavendish, 1st Duke of Newcastle (c. 1593–1676).

New Castle County has the highest population and population density of any Delaware county, and it is the smallest county in the state by area. It has more people than the other two counties, Kent and Sussex, combined. It is also the most economically developed of the three.

- Newport, Rhode Island Special Police Small Badge: Special police usually describes a police force or unit within a police force whose duties and responsibilities are significantly different from other forces in the same country or from other police in the same force, although there is no consistent international definition. A special constable, in most cases, is not a member of a special police forces (SPF); in countries in the Commonwealth of Nations and often elsewhere, a special constable is a voluntary or part-time member of a national or local police force or a person involved in law enforcement who is not a police officer but has some of the powers of a police officer.

False representation as a law enforcement officer is completely illegal, no matter the context. An individual who wears police articles of clothing, including uniforms, IDs, patches, or buttons as a form of impersonation can be convicted of this crime as well.
