  • Original Item: Only One Available. This is a well-worn original U.S. Pattern 1872-style forage cap, manufactured by the New York military outfitter Ridabock & Co. during the later Indian Wars period. Constructed from dark blue wool broadcloth with a black painted-leather visor, leather sweatband, polished cotton lining, and leather chinstrap, it closely follows the regulation U.S. Army Pattern 1872 forage cap. A cavalry insignia and feather presently fitted to the cap are later additions and should not be considered part of its original military configuration.

The cap measures approximately 2¾ inches high at the front, 4¾ inches at the rear seam, with a crown approximately 4½ inches in diameter.

The original leather chinstrap is present, being secured on each side of the cap by a Civil War regulation Federal Eagle button. The reproduction cavalry badge is only held on by one small bit of stitching, and should be removed for display.

The interior crown bears a faded maker’s stamp for Ridabock & Co. of New York. The leather sweatband is missing much of its stitching, and there is no size marking. The kepi is roughly size 6 ¾.

The combination of the Pattern 1872 chasseur-style construction, dark blue wool broadcloth, leather visor and chinstrap, General Service buttons, surviving interior lining, and identifiable Ridabock & Co. New York maker’s stamp makes this a useful representative example of late-19th-century American military-style headgear.
