  • Original Item: Only One Available. This is genuine U.S. Government issue 24 Hours clock, made by the Chelsea Clock Co. of Boston, Mass. It has a 12 jewel, 8 day Chelsea 12EI-1980 movement with a 11 jewel detachable lever escapement, sweep second hand. Fully wound these should tick for 8 days. It is mounted in a dust proof and moisture proof black plastic case with a 6" dial. It features a an hour, minute and second hand. The time is set by moving the hands forward with your finger. You should not move them backward as that will damage the movement.

    The face reads as follows:

    CHELSEA CLOCK CO.
    BOSTON

    U.S. GOVE[RN]MENT

On the back of the case it is marked:

    931993
    CHELSEA CLOCK CO.
    BOSTON

We also removed the movement from this example, which is marked:

    12EI-1980
    CHELSEA CLOCK CO.
    BOSTON U.S.A.
    931993

Consulting serial number information available indicates the clock was made during the 1985-1989 period, during the last years of the cold war. The design however is virtually identical to WWII Period clocks, showing just how good the design was.

The clock face measures 6 inches in diameter. The US Army, Navy and Air Force used these clock from WW2 into the 1980s, and were used in the field to mark the time when a message was received.

Condition is very good, though there has been some flaking of the paint on the clock face, which is in delicate condition. We often see these with "touch ups" in white paint, as over time this is a typical thing to happen. We unfortunately do not have a winding key, so we are not able to see if it runs at all. The crystal in the front of the housing is somewhat loose as well.

Very decorative, and ready to display!
