  • Original Item: Only One Available. The flag of South Korea, also known as the Taegukgi (Korean: 태극기 or 'Taegeuk flag'), has three parts: a white rectangular background, a red and blue Taegeuk in its center, and four black trigrams one toward each corner. Flags similar to the current Taegeukgi were used as the national flag of Korea by the Joseon dynasty, the Korean Empire, and the Korean government-in-exile during Japanese rule. South Korea adopted the Taegukgi as its national flag when it gained independence from Japan on 15 August 1948.

This lovely hand-painted example has an off-white muslin fabric base, and is correctly painted. It is in good condition, and has a reinforced header with hanging ties at either end. This flag was brought back home from the Korean war, and is marked Inchon Korea next to Sept. 1950. There also is the name Dan Holton to the right of this, with an arrow pointing left to the name Bob Hill.

This would indicate that the flag was acquired or used during the September 1950 amphibious UN counter-offensive launched at Incheon. This was the first major counterattack of the war, and encircled the North Korean forces.

A great piece of Korean War History!
