Item Description
Original Item: Only One Available. The Uncle Sam portion of this sign is hand carved wood, giving the illusion that he is actually coming out of the image while gesturing at you. The text is the standard I WANT YOU FOR U.S. ARMY NEAREST RECRUITING STATION. The nearest recruiting station for this would have been the Newark, New Jersey No 7 HQ office, which is written on the backside in chalk and dated 1950.
The overall condition is excellent with a fantastic aged appearance. The paint is still nearly all present but has some age toning present, still giving this an absolutely stunning appearance.
Comes more than ready for further research and display.
Uncle Sam (which has the same initials as United States) is a common national personification of the federal government of the United States or the country in general. Since the early 19th century, Uncle Sam has been a popular symbol of the U.S. government in American culture and a manifestation of patriotic emotion. Uncle Sam has also developed notoriety for his appearance in military propaganda, popularized by a famous 1917 World War I recruiting poster by J. M. Flagg.
J. M. Flagg's 1917 poster was based on the original British Lord Kitchener poster of three years earlier. It was used to recruit soldiers for both World War I and World War II into the US Army. Flagg used a modified version of his own face for Uncle Sam, and veteran Walter Botts provided the pose.
