Original Items. Only One Set Available. This is a very good display pair of original U.S. Army Korean War-era military skis, individually dated November 1951 and January 1952. The two skis are not a factory-matched pair, but they are closely matched in size, construction, appearance, and binding type, making them an excellent representative set of early Cold War U.S. winter-warfare equipment.
The skis are stamped:
U.S.
4538
11-51
6-9
42
And:
U.S.
5349
1-52
6-9
41
They were manufactured two months apart and appear to be one size off, but they match well for display and have a great patina. The top of each ski is stamped C.A. LUND CO / CACONIA N.H..
The foot mounts are well-marked for manufacture by Rottefella of Norway. The skis each measure roughly 80” tall and 2 ¾” wide. There is some loss to the rubber on the foot mounts.
The dates place both skis firmly within the Korean War and early Cold War period, when the U.S. Army renewed its emphasis on mountain and cold-weather operations. From 1951 through 1957, Camp Hale in Colorado was used by the Army’s Mountain and Cold Weather Command for mountaineering, rescue, and winter warfare training.
The combination of the U.S. issue markings, November 1951 and January 1952 dates, closely matched dimensions, original Rottefella bindings, and surviving Cold War-era patina makes this a strong representative display pair. The differing serial and size markings, absence of poles, and deterioration to portions of the binding rubber are the principal condition and completeness considerations, while the clearly dated Army markings remain the strongest historical features.
