Original Items. One-of-a-Kind Pair. This is an excellent pair of Korean War-era Communist flags consisting of a North Korean national flag and a red Chinese Communist-associated flag, both displaying remarkably similar construction. The two are made from the same type of material and feature matching gold-colored corner reinforcements, tie strings, and stitching patterns, strongly suggesting that they were produced by the same maker or originated from the same general source. They were likely brought home together by an American serviceman during or following the Korean War.

The North Korean flag measures 14 x 20”. This flag, also known as the Ramhongsaek Konghwagukgi, consists of a central red panel, bordered both above and below by a narrow white stripe and a broad blue stripe. The central red panel bears a five-pointed red star within a white circle near the hoist. The flag has two gold leaf corner reinforcements with a single line of stitching along this edge and the opposite edge. There is some minor tearing to the corner reinforcements. There is creasing from storage and wear.

The Chinese Communist party flag measures 14 x 27”. It depicts a rather bubble-shaped hammer & sickle with a star, and is made from the same material as the North Korean flag. It has the exact same gold leaf corner reinforcements with a single line of stitching along this edge and the opposite edge. It displays very well with retained color.

The association between Communist China and North Korea was already well established before the Korean War. During the final phases of the Chinese Civil War, North Korea provided assistance to Chinese Communist forces operating in Manchuria, while large numbers of ethnic Korean soldiers served in Communist Chinese formations. Following the establishment of the People's Republic of China in 1949, many of those Korean veterans returned to Korea, where some subsequently participated in the North Korean invasion of South Korea.

China entered the Korean War directly in the autumn of 1950 through the deployment of the Chinese People's Volunteers, whose intervention dramatically expanded the conflict. North Korean and Chinese Communist forces consequently operated alongside one another through much of the war, making the survival of North Korean and Chinese Communist-associated flags as a paired group historically plausible.

What makes this pair especially interesting is the near-identical construction of two flags representing the principal Communist forces involved in the Korean War. Their matching material, corner reinforcements, tie arrangements, and stitching are persuasive evidence of a close relationship between the two pieces, although they cannot establish a specific battlefield capture. The compact 14 x 20-inch North Korean flag and 14 x 27-inch Chinese Communist-associated flag make a particularly effective paired display and provide an unusual material connection to the Communist side of the Korean War.
