This is a very good original 1953 U.S. Marine Corps reversible camouflage shelter half, representing the early post-WWII development of the camouflage system later made famous on Vietnam-era M1 helmet covers. The shelter half is printed with the green leaf or “wine leaf” pattern on one side and the brown Mitchell or “cloud” pattern on the reverse, and is accompanied by three original tent-pole sections with rope and five original orange-painted metal tent pins.
 
The material itself is in good overall condition though there is some staining and minor stiffness. There is also some minor fraying of the material along the edges, with some tears as well. The shelter has been heavily used and does show signs of wear and does have fading present. The frog and leaf camouflage pattern is woodland (green) on one side and desert (sand) on the reverse and was generally only used by the US Marines. This example no longer retains the data label. It comes with five original orange-painted pins and three original poles with their rope.

Orange-painted tent pins are documented with later Marine Corps shelter-half sets. A Marine veteran recalling issues of the same camouflage shelter system in the early 1970s specifically remembered receiving three separate pole sections, guy ropes, and several orange-painted metal tent pegs. This supports the configuration of the accompanying accessories, although it does not by itself establish that every individual pin and pole was originally issued with this particular 1953 shelter half.

The shelter-half system remained in Marine Corps service for many years after the Korean War, and 1953-dated examples are documented as having continued in use into the Vietnam era. Their long service life helps explain why surviving pieces often show a mixture of Korean War manufacture and later field use.

This example is particularly desirable for the combination of its early reversible leaf-and-Mitchell camouflage construction, surviving snap and grommet hardware, three tent-pole sections with rope, and five orange-painted tent pins. The staining, stiffness, fraying, tears, and fading document significant use, while the surviving camouflage remains characteristic of one of the Marine Corps’ most recognizable transitional field-equipment patterns of the early Cold War.
