Original U.S. Kentucky Percussion Rifle with Tiger Maple Stock and British Lock by Golcher - c.1835

Item Description

Original Item: Only one available. This just came out of the attic after a hundred years of storage together with a couple of hundred other antique arms. It was then cleaned very nicely to put it in the best possible light.

Here is an octagonal barreled "Kentucky" style rifle, which more correctly is known as a Pennsylvania Rifle. It was most likely originally in .39 caliber, but has been smooth bored out to .45 for hunting. The rifle was assembled in the United States using a British Trade percussion lock made by JOSEPH GOLCHER of KING STREET, DARLASTON in STAFFORDSHIRE, ENGLAND, who worked from 1830 to 1865. We estimate that this octagonal barrel rifle was made about 1835.

The stock is made from the most beautiful Tiger Maple with very distinctive stripes. The mounts are all brass including the ornate patch box, of which a small section is absent. The weapon is fitted with a double set trigger and is half stocked. Toe of butt missing chip but the gun has the most attractive "curve" to the butt stock.

We feel this rifle has always been in percussion, and is not a conversion from flintlock. Interestingly the rifle is fitted with a "set trigger", where depressing the rear trigger first until it clicks and just touching the front trigger discharges the weapon, hopefully with great accuracy. Unfortunately the lock needs adjustment, so it will not hold a cock, but the set trigger mechanism still works.

Cleaned and ready to display!
