  • Original Item: Only One Available. Here we have a very nice "Kentucky" style flintlock pistol, well ornamented with an attractive "Tiger Maple" figured stock. This design was very popular throughout the United States Frontier during the 1830s and 1840s, and was based on the "Kentucky" or "Pennsylvania" style rifles of the time. Like many, this example has an octagonal barrel and a thin stock with a very curved grip. It was built using a British "Trade" lock, engraved and marked on the side by the maker:

    R.
    ASHMORE
    WARRANTED

British references list this maker as Richard Ashmore, lockmaker, located in the village of Wednesbury, Straffordshire County, England. He was active 1827-1855, and had a military contract for locks in 1838. He exported a lot of locks to the United States, and many examples of Kentucky Rifles have them.

The 10 inch long octagonal barrel looks to be in .47" caliber with 7 groove rifling, and is not marked. Overall length of the pistol is 16 inches, and is nicely ornamented with some small inlays and escutcheons on the back of the pistol grip. It has all brass fittings, with some white metal fittings surrounding the trigger guard an side plates.

The stock is lovely, with the flame and grain clearly visible. There are some repairs in the wrist, and on the right side along the woodline, which has some replaced wood. The ramrod is decorative and could be a replacement, which has has a spiral pattern scorched onto the surface. The lock functions, but a hard trigger pull can get it to fire at half cock, as the sear is worn.

A very nice example of the pistols that the early U.S. Frontier pioneers were armed with. Ready to display!
