Original Item: Only One Available. In lovely matured condition, this is a very nice brass Verner's Pattern VIII Prismatic field compass. These have a glass prism and a glass window on the lid with a line across it, which is used to determine the bearing of an object in the distance. It has a dry-card compass with a both a momentary bearing lock and transit lock, which rotates in the base. When the compass card stops, the required bearing is read off through the prisms. The MkVII version had a manual transit lock, while the MkVIII added an arm to the top lid that automatically locks the card.
The back of the case is marked inside the rubber pad:
CRUCHON & EMONS
BERNE
No. 749
1918
These were usually issued to British forces, however this fine Swiss-made example is actually marked CORPS OF ENGINEERS U.S. ARMY around the top window. There is also no broad arrow on the bottom, so this was definitely purpose made for U.S. forces, however it is identical to the British Issue.
This Verner's Pattern field Compass would have been used in the Trenches by Officers in the first World War. Very well made and fully functional, this comes in its original brown leather carry case marked MODELE / DEPOSE faintly under the lid. The original belt strap is still intact, and the leather is worn, but still solid, with all the stitching intact.
A WWI accessory that in such complete condition and dated is very hard to locate today. In wonderful condition, ready to Display or use.
