Original Item: Only One Available. This is a highly unusual original U.S. M11A1 Practice Anti-Tank Rifle Grenade fitted with a three-piece mortar style adapter in place of the standard tail assembly. The grenade body itself is a known U.S. practice pattern, but the attached adapter is not a standard configuration we can presently identify. It appears to be period in construction and may represent an experimental, shop-made, training, or field modification, but its exact purpose and origin remain unconfirmed. That uncertainty makes this a particularly interesting research piece for an advanced U.S. ordnance collector.

This practice grenade is completely inert and unable to be rendered live again and be used as an explosive device. This example is void of any explosive content and is in total compliance with the current BATF regulations on inert ordnance. Unloaded or dummy grenades, artillery shell casings, and similar devices, which are cut or drilled in an BATF-approved manner so that they cannot be used as ammunition components for destructive devices, are NOT considered NFA weapons. Rifle grenades were developed to extend the range of grenades well beyond normal hand-thrown distances. Their use became widespread during WWI and continued through WWII and the postwar period, with specialized types produced for fragmentation, anti-tank, smoke, signaling, and practice roles.

The M11A1 was a practice anti-tank rifle grenade intended to simulate the handling and launching characteristics of service anti-armor rifle grenades without an explosive warhead. Practice grenades allowed troops to train with the weight, balance, launching procedure, and trajectory of the live weapon while reducing cost and danger.

The body shows the expected utilitarian construction and wear associated with training ordnance.

What makes this example particularly unusual is the assembly fitted to the rear.

A standard M11A1 would normally be encountered with a rifle grenade tail assembly, but this example instead has a three-piece mortar style adapter.

The assembly appears purpose-built rather than simply improvised from loose parts, but we have not been able to positively identify it in standard references.

It may have been intended to adapt the grenade for use with another launching system, possibly for training or experimental purposes, but that remains speculative.

It is equally possible that the adapter was fabricated locally by an ordnance shop, training facility, or individual unit.

Without documentation or a matching identified example, we do not want to assign a definitive military designation or function to it.

The adapter appears to have been installed long enough ago to show age and wear consistent with the grenade, although that alone cannot establish when or by whom the modification was made.
